Suicide Attack in North Waziristan Kills 16 Pakistani Soldiers

On June 28, 2025, a suicide bombing in Pakistan’s North Waziristan district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, claimed the lives of 16 Pakistani soldiers and injured 29 others, including civilians. The attack, executed by the Hafiz Gul Bahadur faction of the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), involved a suicide bomber ramming an explosive-laden vehicle into a military convoy. The blast, reportedly using 800 kg of explosives, also caused two nearby houses to collapse, injuring six children. Initial reports cited 13 deaths, but the toll was later revised to 16, with four soldiers in critical condition.

The attack, one of the deadliest in recent months, highlights the escalating violence in Pakistan’s border regions since the Taliban’s 2021 return to power in Afghanistan. Islamabad accuses Afghan-based militants of orchestrating such attacks, a claim Kabul denies. Pakistan’s military alleges Indian involvement, which India’s Ministry of External Affairs dismissed as “contemptible.” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack as a “cowardly act.”

The incident underscores Pakistan’s fragile security situation, with 290 people, mostly security personnel, killed in attacks this year. The TTP’s ongoing insurgency aims to overthrow the government for an Islamic system, exploiting regional tensions.
